SMSC

'There are two things we should give our children: one is roots and the other is wings' Unknown

Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural  development is about  ensuring  our children have roots to help them hold their ground in a world that is ever changing and wings, which will allow them to aim high and determine their future.

SMSC is the cornerstone of Personal Development and woven throughout the curriculum and way of life at Berridge.

SMSC, is not an explicit subject, but is delivered in a variety of ways through our:

  • Curriculum
  • Assemblies
  • Theme days
  • PSHE
  • RE
  • Enrichment opportunities, such as trips, visitors, clubs
  • Weekly topical discussions/debates

These discussions, which we receive weekly from Picture News, are based on a current national or global issue or event and is in the form of a Big Question- the resources sent give background and context. These debates/discussions, which can sometimes be controversial, also give pupils the opportunity to experience British Values in an engaging way.

Recent questions being debated were

  • Can you learn to persevere?
  • What does art mean to you?
  • Should everybody be entitled to a private life?
  • Should there be a limit on how rich one person can become?
  • Should mobile phones be banned in schools?
  • How can you make your voice heard?
