Swimming

The National Curriculum states:

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations’.

At our school, every pupil in years 4, 5 & 6 receives swimming instruction for a whole term.  Lessons take place at the Harvey Hadden Stadium and last for 45 minutes. By the end of year 6 all pupils will have had 3 full terms of swimming.
